The Upgrading Gear System is new and will only take ingame time to fully understand. You will need different types of Crests to upgrade different gear. Two of them are called Whelplings and Drakes which will upgrade gear similar to outdoor/LFR/Normal Raid, and farm this dierctly on week 1.

Killing a boss in the new raid will unlock loot from all previous bosses in your Great Vault. For example: - killing 2nd boss will unlock 1st and 2nd boss loot on the Great Vault - killing last boss will unlock all 9 bosses for loot on the Great Vault.
